RSPB Volunteering Opportunity

Portmore Lough outside Aghalee is a haven for birds and wildlife but now, thanks to an exciting new project, volunteers will have the chance
to make their home at the RSPB reserve too!
Former warden Eddie Franklin worked tirelessly to restore the site's precious habitats until his retirement in 1999. Sadly, he passed away in August 2012 and the cottage he lived in, just a stone's-throw from the reserve, has been empty since.

Funding from the Albert George and Nancy Caroline Longman Trust, managed by the Equity Trustees, the Enkalon Foundation and NIEA, has enabled the charity to totally refurbish the cottage, creating a modern facility for 'live-in' volunteers and making Portmore Lough the first all-year residential volunteering scheme in Northern Ireland.

The scheme will allow the RSPB to welcome more volunteers than ever
before, and offer training opportunities to people from across the world, as the charity works to give nature a home in the Lough Neagh area and beyond.

The cottage can accommodate three volunteers at any one time on
placements lasting anything from two weeks to six months and the charity
is on the lookout for enthusiastic people who relish a challenge.
